2011 Big Ten Football: Week 8 Picks

Will the Legends Division in the Big Ten be decided this week? It is entirely possible with Michigan State visiting Nebraska in the game of the week in the conference.

Michigan State (6-1, 3-0) at Nebraska (6-1, 2-1) Noon, ESPN

Nebraska needs this game just to have a chance at Indy. A second loss would put them behind Michigan, Iowa, and Michigan State in their division. A win for them sets up their game with the Wolverines as the next Big Game in the Legends Division. Michigan State has only Iowa as a serious threat after this game. Indiana, Northwestern, and Minnesota each have yet to win a Big Ten game and Michigan State plays all three in their last four.  Prediction: Michigan State 31, Nebraska 24

Northwestern (2-5, 0-4) at Indiana (1-7, 0-4) Noon, Big Ten Network

Neither of these teams have a strong defense. In fact, it has been defense that has failed them int heir winless starts to league play. That should make for a fun shootout between two decent offenses. Indiana’s Tre Roberson earned his first career start last week at quarterback as a true freshman. His athleticism gives the Hoosiers hope for the future, something that isn’t often said in Bloomington for football. Prediction: Indiana 45, Northwestern 42

Purdue (4-3, 2-1) at Michigan (6-1, 2-1) Noon, ESPN2

Purdue is looking for only its second win in Ann Arbor since 1966 when Bob Griese was quarterback for the Boilermakers. They did win two seasons ago 38-36, and they come in on a bit of a role after upsetting Illinois last week on homecoming. Michigan has Denard Robinson, and that’s it on offense. Purdue’s defensive line finally woke up last week and will try to hassle Robinson into mistakes. Prediction: Purdue 27, Michigan 24

Iowa (5-2, 2-1) at Minnesota (1-6, 0-3) 3:30pm Big Ten Network

Minnesota is historically bad this year. They have not scored a point in Big Ten play without already trailing 31-0 in a game. They only have 27 points total, and were shutout 58-0 in their league opener. Iowa is playing to win back the Floyd of Rosedale, the long time trophy played for between the Hawkeyes and Golden Gophers. They shouldn’t have any trouble taking home the giant bronze pig. Prediction: Iowa 45, Minnesota 10

Illinois (6-2, 2-2) at Penn State (7-1, 4-0) 3:30pm ABC/ESPN2

These teams are going in opposite directions. Penn State hasn’t looked very good offensively to start the year, but they are figuring things out. Illinois has fallen apart offensively after a 6-0 start. The Nittany Lions are the last unbeaten team in league play in the Leaders Division, and they will look to hold on to that spot. Prediction: Penn State 21, Illinois 14

As usual, Black Shoe Diaries does an excellent job of telling the story in stats. They’re pretty even, but I’ll go with the team that is coming together rather than falling apart. Prediction: Penn State 21, Illinois 14

Wisconsin (6-1, 2-1) at Ohio State (4-3, 1-2) 8pm ESPN

I think there is going to be an angry group of Badgers at the Horseshoe this weekend, and no matter how good Ohio State’s defense is it won’t matter. Russell Wilson finally had a bad game, but the Badgers simply have too many weapons. Montee Ball has more touchdowns than most teams have gotten this year, and he’ll add to it at Ohio State. Prediction: Wisconsin 34, Ohio State 17
