Week 17 was a drama filled weekend truly worthy of the last week of the regular season. It is not often that the final week of the regular season features so many games with so many implications. From making the playoffs to seeding, to winning the division, the implications for this final week of the 2011 season were massive. And we saw equally brilliant games and efforts. One game alone produced 3 of our nominees for the BadaSSitude Pro Football Player Of Week 17!
Before Week 17, very few people had ever had of Matt Flynn. Matt Flynn, #10, Quarterback for the Green Bay Packers is Aaron Rodgers understudy. And by the looks of it, he is a uniquely more than capable understudy. Against the Detroit Lions, Matt not only led the Green Bay Packers to a 45-41 win but he did so with exceptional quality. He completed 31 of 44 (70.5%) pass attempts for 480 yards and 6 touchdowns (a new franchise record!) completing the record breaking day with a 136,4 QB rating. And this, in his only 2nd ever start in the NFL!! Real BadaSSitude.
Victor Cruz, #80, Wide Receiver for the New York Giants made sure that the New York Giants got the win they needed to capture the division title and get into the playoffs. Against the Dallas Cowboys Cruz was simply, overwhelmingly great. In doing his part to deliver the a 31-14 win for the New York Giants, Victor Cruz caught 6 catches for 178 yards and 1 touchdown. Cruz averaged 29.7 yards per catch. But it was the clutch catches, the escapability, the pace, the wiliness, that lifted him above everyone else on this evening. His long catch of the night was for 74 yards as he scampered, twisted, and scooted away to leave the Dallas Cowboys defense in the dust for a touchdown.
Calvin Johnson aka “Megatron”, #81, Wide Receiver for the Detroit Lions is a BadaSS! He is the league leader in receiving yards in the NFL in the 2011 season. Which is why we were all flabbergasted to find that he had not once been nominated for the BadaSSitude Pro Football Player of the Week before Week 17. This week, in a 41-45 loss against the Green Bay Packers, Johnson caught 11 passes for 244 yards to bring his season total to 1681 yards, tops in the league and a full 112 receiving yards more than the next closest receiver. For the game, averaged a ridiculous 22.2 yards per catch even though his long catch for the afternoon was 41 yards. He caught 11 passes in a game in which the quarterback completed 36 passes! If that is not BadaSSitude, we do not know what is.
Matthew Stafford, #9, Quarterback for the Detroit Lions has had a dream season. He was previously a nominee for the BadaSSitude Pro Football Player of the Week in Week 2, Week 11 and Week 15. But in the Week 17 41-45 loss against the Green Bay Packers, he had a a game for the ages. Stafford completed 36 of his 59 pass attempts, for 520 yards, 5 touchdowns and a 103.8 quarterback rating. Stafford also set franchise records for touchdowns and passing yardage in a season with 5038. The yardage is third in the NFL this season, only behind Drew Breese and Tom Brady, just a hair off Dan Marino’s passing yardage record and the fifth highest total in NFL history. Matt Stafford’s BadaSSitude is beyond any doubt.
