Today Manchester United recorded a comfortable win over Wigan in the Premier League to ensure that they maintain their 7 point lead at the top of the table. They had a shaky start to the season with poor results in their first few games but since recovering from that they haven’t looked back.
They got their first goal when Hernandez side-footed in a deflected Evra shot on 35 minutes. Van Persie made it 2-0 for Manchester United on 43 minutes with a fantastic goal and an excellent finish when he curled the ball into the far corner after he turned Ramis. Hernandez scored his second from a deflected Van Persie free kick on 63 minutes. A terrible mistake from the Wigan defence allowed Van Persie to poach another on 88 minutes.
Manchester United have won 8 of their last 9 league games and are looking to be sure favourites to be crowned Premier League champions at the end of the season. The only 2 teams capable of stopping them are Manchester City and Chelsea but neither look like they’re going to. Chelsea lack a goals scorer as Torres is too inconsistent. They need their own Van Persie, who is the main reason Manchester United are ahead with his consistent and outstanding goal scoring. If Chelsea buy a striker or two now the transfer window is open it could turn them into contenders, but even a striker of the ability of Falcao is unlikely to be able to close the 14 point gap.
Manchester City only lie 7 points behind Manchester United so a couple of good signings could be enough for them. Mancini has admitted that they will spend this month and everyone is aware of the huge spending power which they possess. A couple of quality signings like De Rossi and Falcao should be enough to allow them to cause Manchester United to build up a nervous sweat.
But even so the title is Manchester United’s to throw away, and without a poor run from Manchester United which would allow another team to catch up, January signings wouldn’t make much difference. No other team can win the Premier League without some help from Manchester United. After throwing away an 8 point lead last season you can be virtually guaranteed that Manchester United won’t do the same again. They can be caught, but it’s unlikely that they will be as long as they keep doing what they are.
