The Pep Guardiola era at Manchester City could not be going more smoothly so far. City has amassed the maximum 15 points after five Premier League matches, included in them is a road win at Manchester United. They are also unbeaten in the Champions League and have a +4 goal differential after one Group Stage match, a 4-0 rout of Borussia Monchengladbach.
City has been without their leading goal scorer in Sergio Aguero for the Man U and Bournemouth matches after he was suspended for three games for throwing an elbow at a West Ham player. But Kevin DeBruyne has been a great number one option these past two matches, scoring the first goal of both games. If this wasn’t enough bad news for the rest of the Premier League, City will have Vincent Kompany back at full strength soon. Kompany was in uniform for the first time this season on Saturday. After one more Premier League match, they will also get Aguero back. If City is this good shorthanded, how good will they be when everyone is healthy?
After five matches, City has a +11 goal differential. That is over two per game. Of course, they won’t be able to keep up with that pace for 38 matches, but they shouldn’t have to. Plus, they are stating to put distance between themselves and the teams most feel have the best chance to win the championship other than them. Everton is a surprise in second place with 13 points. With Lukaku back scoring goals they are 4-0-1 in their five matches and are +7. But who really thinks they will keep that pace up?
Man U has fallen all the way back to seventh after dropping the Manchester Derby and then losing to Watford 3-1 on Sunday. Man U went into the Derby in a tie, and now they trail by six points. Chelsea also was tied after three matches, but they have a loss and a draw in their last two. They are tied with Liverpool and Arsenal at 3-1-1. Tottenham is the only other team without a loss so far. They are 3-0-2 for 11 points.
City will be playing Swansea City twice this week. On Wednesday they meet in a Football League Cup match. The two sides will meet again on Saturday in the Premier League. It will be interesting to see which players Guardiola uses on Wednesday. Aguero will likely play since he is not eligible on Saturday. On September 28, City will visit Celtic in Champions League Group Play before a big match on October 2 at Tottenham.
If City keeps up the pace and wins all four of those matches, and they should win at least three, then they could be in store for quite a season. Because as good as they have been so far, they still have room to get even better. Raheem Sterling is coming along and with some of the new additions such as Claudio Bravo at goalkeeper and Ilkay Gundogan, they are really loaded. They could really give Barcelona a tough time in the Champions League Group Stage matches.
