Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops has earned the nickname “Big Game Bob” because his teams often play at their best in the biggest games. This season, the Sooners were 5-0 against ranked teams such as Tennessee, Baylor, TCU, Kansas State and Oklahoma State. Clemson is not impressed.
When will Clemson finally earn some respect? The term “Clemsoning” is college football speak for being the opposite of “Big Game Bob”. The Tigers have a reputation for becoming a shrinking violet in the biggest games. But these Tigers whipped Ohio State in the Orange Bowl just two years ago, beat the Sooners like a red-headed stepchild in last season’s bowl game and beat their nemesis Florida State as well as a red hot North Carolina in the ACC Championship Game.
Still, Clemson seems to get slighted. Quarterback Deshaun Watson, the unbeaten quarterback of the #1 Tigers, came in third among the Heisman Finalists, which is dead last among the ones invited to New York. Then the odds makers had them the underdog against the #4 Sooners going into the Orange Bowl.
But after the Tigers trailed by one point at the half, Watson and the Tigers left no doubt in the second half why they are the #1 team. They shut Oklahoma out in the second half, continuously harassing Baker Mayfield into throwing interceptions and pounding the Sooners defense with big runs from scrimmage. What looked like it was going to be a nail-biter at halftime turned into a laugher by the end of the third quarter. If there are two better football players than Watson, I’ve not seen them. Watson Threw for 187 yards and one touchdown and ran for 145 and another touchdown. He carved up the Sooners defense like a Christmas ham.
We need a new definition for the term “Clemsoning.”
