College Bowl Games Begin on Saturday: Which Ones Do You Need to Watch This Weekend?

With 40 College Football Bowls, all of which are on TV, it is nearly impossible to watch them all. So lucky for you we will be here to preview these games and tell you which ones you will want to watch and which you can put on the DVR and save for sometime when you’re bored and there’s nothing on TV.

On Saturday we have a bunch of bowl games on featuring teams from the “Group of Five” conferences who don’t get much attention. But some of these teams can be very entertaining. Here is the schedule for Saturday and a 1-5 rating on our excitement scale. One being look for something else to do and five being do not miss this one even if it means skipping your daughter’s wedding…

New Mexico Bowl- New Mexico vs UT-San Antonio. 2:00 ESPN. UTSA is 6-6. Two of their losses were to Power Five teams Arizona State 32-28 and Texas A&M 23-10. They have wins over bowl bound teams North Texas, Middle Tennessee and Southern Miss and losses to bowl teams Colorado State, Old Dominion and Louisiana Tech. New Mexico is 8-4 with wins in six of their seven games. They have wins over bowl teams Hawaii and Wyoming and also Air Force, Nevada and Utah State. The Lobos schedule was not a s tough as the Roadrunners so don’t let the records fool you. But the Lobos will have a home field advantage so we like them to win. Rating 2.

Las Vegas Bowl- San Diego State vs Houston- 3:30 ABC. One of the resons the previous game only gets a rating of two is at halftime you will want to switch over to this game. 10-3 San Diego State with Donell Pumphrey, the nation’s leading rusher, will take on 9-3 Houston, featuring Greg Ward, one of the game’s best quarterbacks. The Cougars have big wins over Oklahoma and Louisville as well as other bowl teams such as UCF and Tulsa. The Aztecs have beaten the Cal Bears and won the Mountain West Conference Championship Game over Wyoming. This will be a good one. Rating 4.

Camellia Bowl- Toledo vs Appalachian State- 5:30 ESPN. Both teams come in at 9-3. Both of these teams are pretty good teams too. App State took Tennessee to overtime in Knoxville, beat Old Dominion, UL-Lafayette and Idaho, all by lopsided scores. Toledo has wins over Arkansas State, Eastern Michigan, Central Michigan and a narrow two-point loss to BYU. Rating 3.

Cure Bowl- UCF vs Arkansas State-  5:30 CBS sports network. UCF is 6-6 and is coming off an 0-12 season in 2015. They had some close losses to Maryland, Temple and Houston and had wins over East Carolina, Cincinnati, Tulane and UConn. Arkansas State finished 7-5 with a 7-1 conference record. The Knights will have the home field advantage as this game is in Orlando. Rating 3.

New Orleans Bowl- UL-Lafayette vs Southern Mississippi- 9:00 ESPN. Both of these teams have had some memorable trips to New Orleans for this game. Both will bring a lot of fans to the game and it will be a fun one. The Ragin Cajuns are 6-6 but have won three of the last four, the only loss a 35-21 loss to Georgia. Southern miss is also 6-6 with wins over Kentucky, UTEP, Rice and Louisiana Tech. Rating 3.5.
