Kevin Durant has signed with the Golden State Warriors! I know what most of you are thinking “Might as well just give them the trophy now and cancel next season” right? Well. before you do that, remember one thing, there is still only one basketball out there.
K. D. is going to want his shots. That will mean fewer shots for Steph Curry and Klay Thompson. It has to. They aren’t going to put more time on the clock. So will the fewer shots for the other guys be accepted? Or will there be some grumbling about who’s getting the ball? This we don’t know yet. Sometimes a team can acquire too much talent. Remember that the Miami Heat of Lebron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh were beaten in their first trip to the Finals by the Dallas Mavericks in six games. Part of the problem that first year was the Heat had not yet figured out that James was the best player on the team and he often deferred late in the game. In that series he was ripped for his terrible fourth quarters.
Then the Heat was beaten again in the Finals three years later by the San Antonio Spurs who to be honest, were just flat out better than they were. So in four seasons, that team who Lebron said would win “Not three, not four, not five” championships went two for four.
So with that in mind, it might be a bit premature to just assume it’s over for the nest two or three years. If any team should know anything can happen in a seven game series it is the Warriors who just lost a 3-1 lead in the NBA Finals to Lebron and the Cleveland Cavaliers, with two of the last three games at home. On paper, that should have been an easy win for the Warriors. But the game isn’t played on paper.
So while “on paper” it would seem the Warriors should cruise through the season and win a championship next year, let’s just wait and see how it all plays out.
One thing we do know though is the Oklahoma City Thunder will drop off a lot next year without Durant and Serge Ibaka. So who can give the Warriors competition in the West? San Antonio and the Los Angeles Clippers would seem to be the top two contenders. If Chris Paul and Blake Griffin can stay healthy, the Clippers are really good. The Spurs with Lamarcus Aldridge and Kawhi Leonard are still very good as well.
Do not sleep on the Boston Celtics next year either. If they ever find a three-point threat they will be really good. So it’s a little too soon to cancel the season.
