The Florida State Seminoles fans are feeling pretty good about basketball these days. Their Noles are a #1 seed according to early “Bracketology” experts. But winning road games in the ACC at places like North Carolina are tough. FSU found this out on Saturday when the Tar Heels scored 96 points on the usually great FSU defense in a 13 point win. Does this mean FSU was over rated?

Very good college basketball teams have gone to Chapel Hill and lost by double digits over the years. So no, this does not mean the Noles are over rated. This was a game that FSU was fighting from behind all day long, several times getting close, but not able to catch all the way back up. How will they respond after this? That is what will tell the tale as to whether FSU is a Final Four contender.

Florida State is in the midst of a six game stretch facing ranked opponents. That’s life in the ACC. Everywhere you go you’re facing a great team. If it’s not Carolina, it’s Notre Dame, Louisville, Duke, Virginia, or Miami. So to lose a game now and then is no big deal, in fact it may be a good thing. If you are going to get a long win streak snapped, better to do it now than in March.

With guys like Michael Ojo, Terrance Mann, Dwayne Bacon and Xavier Rattan-Mayes, they have plenty of size and talent. Bacon averages over 17 points per game and Rattan Mayes and Jonathan Isaac also average in double figures.

#20 Notre Dame and #14 Louisville close out the six game stretch and so far FSU is 3-1. If they can get a split of those two, that is a good record. It’s kind of reminiscent of the time back in the early days of Bobby Bowden when his football Noles faced five straight ranked opponents on the road and went 3-2. That was a brutal stretch and when they emerged from it, they established themselves as a football powerhouse, where they have remained to this day. ¬†Might this be the beginning of a great era of Seminole Basketball?

Maybe. But FSU a #1 seed? Let’s not get carried away just yet. This loss to North Carolina shows that they still have a way to go.
