Georgia’s Improbable Run Continues at WCWS

The Georgia Bulldogs softball team is a dangerous team right now. They are not supposed to still be playing, yet they are in Oklahoma City for the Women’s College World Series. The Lady Bulldogs knocked out the two-time defending National Champion and overall #1 seed Florida Gators on a pinch hit, two out, two strike walk off in Game Two to sweep the Super Regional in Gainesville to get to OKC and today, they capitalized on seven (yes, seven) Florida State Seminoles errors to win the first game of the WCWS, 5-4.

When a team gets hot at the end of the season like Georgia has, they are tough to beat. Sometimes teams like this get on a roll with no pressure and they play fast and loose, making them even tougher to beat. Today, the game winning run came in on a daring base-running play.

Florida State greatly contributed with a WCWS record seven errors in the game resulting in four unearned Georgia runs. That is the difference between being tight and being loose. FSU was clearly tight as they booted routine grounders all over the field. It wasn’t just one or two of them, it was all of them. Clearly they felt the pressure of being at the World Series.

In the second game of the day, another SEC heavyweight, the SEC Tournament Champion Auburn Tigers opened their game with the UCLA Bruins with a seven spot in the first inning on their way to an easy win. UCLA is at the WCWS for the all-time record 26th time. The Bruins have won the event 11 times in their storied history. Auburn is there for only their second time, yet they looked every bit the team that knew what to expect.

So the winner’s bracket sets up two old SEC rivals in Georgia and Auburn. These two schools have the longest running football series in the South. Their campuses are only a short drive apart. This should be a lot of fun. Auburn swept Georgia earlier this season, but these are not the same Bulldogs that they will face in OKC.

So who do we like in the next game? That is a good question. It’s tough to bet against Georgia right now. They went on the road and knocked out the #1 team in two games. There is no team they should fear the rest of the way. But Auburn is also hot. They won the SEC Tournament, in which Georgia also played.

Our prediction is Auburn wins 2-1.
