The Kentucky Wildcats were left for dead after blowing a 21 point lead at Tennessee for their sixth lost of the season. Some of us were not so sure. Remember the Wildcats team of two seasons ago that played possum all during the regular season? That team caught fire when the postseason began and nearly won both the SEC Tournament and the NCAA Tournament, going to the championship game in both.
This UK team seems to be arriving to the party even earlier. Since the Tennessee loss, Kentucky has blown out three fairly tough opponents, Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. Florida and Georgia didn’t raise many eyebrows since both were at homm where the Kats are unbeatable. But after Saturday’s blowout of a very good Gamecocks team on the road, the rest of the college basketball world is now officially on notice.
Tyler Ulis and Jamal Murray have been dominant these past few games. Murray blasted the Gators for 35 points in UK’s 19 point win. Ulis has been a 20+ point scorer all season. What really makes it a bit scary is Alex Poythress hasn’t played in the last few games due to injury. When they get him back, they could really be tough to beat.
On Saturday, they blew Carolina out on the road without their Head Coach for the vast majority of the game. John Calipari was tossed so early, they hadn’t even gone to a commercial yet. But his young team apparently didn’t need him much as this game was never really close.
With the NCAA Tournament field seemingly wide open, suddenly Kentucky looks like a strong bet to win it all. They still have some tough games on the schedule such as a rematch with Tennessee, a road game at Floria and a rematch with Ben Simmons and LSU. Then there is also a road game at Texas A&M and another at Vanderbilt and of course the SEC Tournament. If UK looks good going through this schedule the rest of the way, watch out for them in the Big Dance
