Leicester City is alone atop the Premier League standings after Round 23. Yes, you read that right. Leicester City, a team that two years ago was no even part of the 20-team Premier League is alone on top of the standings with 15 to go.
Leicester came into this round tied with Arsenal with 44 points, one point ahead of Manchester City. The upstarts had an easy time with Stoke City, winning 3-0. Danny Drinkwater scored the first goal a few minutes before halftime with a sweet left footer that deflected off a defender and slipped inside the post. Jamie Vardy then made it 2-0 at 66′ with his 15th goal this season and the rout was on.
Later in the afternoon, Manchester City found themselves down 1-0 right out of the gate when West Ham United cored in 53 seconds on a fast break the Los Angeles Lakers would have been proud of. Enner Valencia rifled one past Joe Hart for the 1-0 lead. But City answered quickly when Sergio Aguero was taken down inside the panalty area and then converted the penalty kick at the 7′ mark.
City allowed a second rather embarrassing goal in the second half when a throw in found itself behind the defense and Valencia beat everyone to the ball and scored his second of the game. City equalized on Aguero’s second of the game at 81′ to salvage one point.
Arsenal was not so fortunate in the London Derby against Chelsea. An early red card against Arsenal foreced them to play with 10 men for most of the match and Diego Costa capitalized with the game’s only goal at the 23′ mark. The loss leaves Arsenal tied with City and two points ahead of Tottenham. They trail both of those teams by seven goals in the tie-breaker.
If Leicester City hangs on to win this championship it might be the biggest upset in Premier League history. At this time a year ago, they were fighting to escape relegation. Absolutely nobody mentioned this team in the preseason as a possible champion. Their payroll is among the lowest in the Premier League. But with about 60% of the season over, here they are.
This would be 1969 New York Mets-type stuff if they win this. The rest of the season should be a lot if fun.
