While it is true that the best teams in Europe belong to Spain and Germany, the best league is by far the English Premier League. This is perhaps the reason that the clubs in this league would rather win this than the Champions League. Some of that sentiment may be a bit reality based as no English team really has a chance to win the Champions League, but much of this can be attributed to how difficult the 38 game grind of a Premier League season is. There really are few breaks in this schedule. If your team is hurting a bit, you can free fall in the standings very quickly. We are entering the tenth week and there are five teams within one point of the top spot now that Manchester City has cooled off.
Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool are tied with 20 points each and right behind them are Chelsea and Tottenham at 19 points. But this is far from a five team league. There are potential upsets all over in this league. You have Everton in sixth with 15 points and their star player Lukaku who seems to score at will. There is the always dangerous Manchester United who just beat City on Wednesday in a League Cup match 1-0. There is defending champion Leicester City who is doing quite well in their Champions League Group thank you very much.
But even at the bottom of the league you cannot let up. Last weekend Tottenham was held 0-0 against Bournemouth while Arsenal was also held 0-0 against Middlesbrough and City was held 1-1 at home with Southampton. So who will emerge?
If City can get it’s defensive problems straightened out the rest of the way, they have to be considered the favorites. They can score with several different players such as Aguero, Silva, DeBruyne, Sterling, and several others. They will keep possession of the ball and eventually find an opening. As Vincent Kompany plays more and gets more acclimated to Pep Guardiola’s system, this should help them on defense.
But Tottenham. is hanging in there despite their best player in Harry Kane being injured. He is about to return and the Spurs have yet to lose a match.
A case can certainly be made for Chelsea after the way they dismantled Manchester United a week ago. That 4-0 buttkicking was astonishing. They scored the first goal only 30 seconds into the match and it snowballed from there. So in other words. you will just have to keep watching and find out because it really could be any one of the five. Think about this…one of these five teams will not make the Champions League at all. Go to La Liga or Bundesliga and see where the fifth place team is right now. That is why the Premier League is great.
