The College Football Bowl season has been one upset after another. It began on December 17th when The Houston Cougars who spent much of the year in the Top 25, went down to the San Diego State Aztecs in a rout, 34-10 in the Las Vegas Bowl. Later that day the favored UCF Knights were blown out by Arkansas State 31-13 in the Cure Bowl.
Then on December 22, Idaho routed Colorado State 61-50 at the Potato Bowl in a game not nearly as close as the final score. Then the next night we saw Louisiana Tech upset #25 Navy in a thriller at the Armed Forces Bowl 48-45. Then we saw some other surprises to may such as Boston College over Maryland in the Quick Lane Bowl 36-30 and NC State easily whipping Vanderbilt 41-17 at the Independence Bowl.
But since then it has really gotten whacky with games such as Minnesota beating Washington State 17-12 at the Holiday Bowl, Northwestern beating #23 Pittsburgh at the Pinstripe Bowl, and Miami beating #16 West Virginia rather easily 31-14 at the Russell Athletic Bowl. What other surprises might be in store for the rest of bowl season? Could we see Western Michigan knock off Wisconsin? LSU beat Louisville? Or dare we dream to think that Washington could upset Alabama in the semifinal game at the Peach Bowl?
One thing is for sure, the teams with the “distractions” have come out and plated fantastic. Minnesota players were thinking of boycotting the game due to the suspensions of 10 players, but decided to play. Not only did they show up but they shut down a high powered Cougars offense better than anyone else has all year.
Also, the Baylor Bears who came into their bowl games riding a six game losing skid and their best running back Shock Linwood deciding to skip the game. All they did was thump a 10-3 Boise State team 31-12 at the Cactus Bowl. We also saw Wake Forest, after the “Wakey Leaks” scandal, go to the Military Bowl and knock off #23 Temple 34-26. Maybe people had better watch out for Stanford, LSU and Oklahoma the rest of the way?
So far, no team ranked in the Top 25 has won over an unranked team in any bowl game. So now might be a good time to put a bet on Nebraska to beat Tennessee or Iowa to knock off Florida.
