Thrilling Third Week in the NFL

Thrilling Third Week in the NFL

Saints Fall to 0-3 With OT Loss

It has been a disastrous start to the season for the New Orleans Saints.  Sunday, it only got worse.  The Chiefs scored 11 points in the 4th quarter Sunday in New Orleans to tie the game and send it to overtime.  Ryan Succop would make his 6th field goal of the game in overtime to win the game and send the Saints to their third straight loss.  It doesn’t get much easier for Drew Brees and company as they have to travel to Green Bay next week.

Close Kick Drops Patriots to 1-2

Bill Belichick wasn’t too satisfied following a game winning kick by rookie Justin Tucker to hand the Patriots their second straight loss.  Belichick appeared to grab one of the referees after the loss.  The Patriots’ coach will face the consequences this week.  The Pats blew a nine point lead in the last five minutes.  Torrey Smith, after facing the loss of his brother earlier in the day, had an incredible performance catching six passes for 127 yards and two touchdowns.  The Patriots will travel to Buffalo next to play the 2-1 Bills.  The Ravens will play in Baltimore against the Browns on Thursday.

Jets Escape Miami with Win, but Lose Star

The Miami Dolphins essentially handed the New York Jets the football game on Sunday on a silver platter.  Kicker Dan Carpenter missed his second field goal of the game in overtime to give the Jets yet another opportunity to win.  Nick Folk would take advantage, making a 33 yard kick to propel the Jets to a 2-1 start to the season.  Both offenses were hard to watch.  While the Jets would get the win despite the offensive struggles, they lost their star cornerback Darrelle Revis for the season to a torn ACL.  Losing Revis is a huge blow for Gang Green and could play a pivotal role in their playoff hopes this season.

Titans Win Wild Shootout in OT

The Titans and Lions had a shootout in the 4th quarter combining for 46 points.  Shaun Hill came in to replace an injured Matthew Stafford and ended regulation with a hail mary to the endzone and the Lions would tie the game on the extra point.  With the new rules in the NFL this year, the Lions had a shot to tie the game after Rob Bironas made a field goal to take the lead, 44-41.  They chose to go for it on 4th down instead of opting for a field goal and would not convert giving the Titans their first win of the season.

Raiders Steel a Win in Oakland

The Raiders blanked the Steelers in the 4th quarter after trailing 31-21.  Oakland scored 13 points in the 4th quarter capped off by a Sebastian Janikowski 43 yard field goal to win the game with no time remaining.  The Raiders suffered a scare when wide receiver Darius Heyward-Bey was knocked unconscious after a helmet-to-helmet hit by safety Ryan Mundy in the endzone.  Heyward-Bey was diagnosed with a concussion and a strained neck and is expected to make a full recovery.  Oakland needed the victory to avoid an 0-3 start before traveling to Denver next week.  Dennis Allen got his first win as an NFL head coach.
