Ho Hum. The United States Men’s and Women’s teams won another Olympic Gold Medal. Winning gold for the USA has become old hat. The men have now won 76 straight games and three straight gold medals, running their all time record to 15 golds and all but one in every Olympics since 1992, when the NBA became part of the games. On Sunday, the Americans breezed to an easy 96-66 win over Serbia in coach Mike Krzyzewski’s final game. He finishes with a record of 88-1 as Team USA’s Head Coach. Carmelo Anthony also wraps up his Team USA career with a record three Olympic Gold Medals and one Bronze Medal, and he is also Team USA’s all time leading scorer and rebounder in Olympic competition.
Kevin Durant led the Americans with 30 points on Sunday as Team USA dominated a Serbian team that nearly took them into overtime in pool play and also completely dominated Team Australia in a stunning upset in the semifinals on Friday. This game was perhaps the biggest sporting event in the country’s history and they were never in it.
The only team as dominant as USA Men’s basketball in the Olympics is Team USA women’s basketball. The women beat Spain in their gold medal game 101-72. They were never challenged in any game in the entire tournament, unlike the men who had a couple of tight ones in pool play. Sue Bird, Tamika Catchings and Diana Taurasi will go out with four Gold Medals each as the women have now won six consecutive. Minnesota Lynx teammates Lindsey Whalen and Maya Moore took the game over after Spain got out to a 17-14 early lead. Together they helped Team USA cruise out to a 35-14 run to close out the first half.
Coach Geno Auriemma will likely also be closing his Team USA career after these Olympics on another gold medal winning note. Team USA has now on 49 games in a row and Coach Auriemma has been the coach ever since 2010. He now has won two Olympic Golds as coach.
Is there any hope for the rest of the world in the near future? Perhaps in the men’s game Team Australia may be able to give the American some competition in the future with Ben Simmons, the overall number one NBA draft pick many compare to Lebron James, and Dante Exum joining the team. But other than them, it doesn’t appear so.
