The first weekend of games in the NFL 2012 season is now out of the way. There were surprises and then there were thrills. And same old same old. And more. And it was all fun. As the dust
settles, we get down to the business of nominating, for the privilege of your vote, this seasons BadaSSitude Pro Football Player of Week 1. Lets take a look.
He is a rookie, but it was not the first time most of us had heard of Robert Griffin III, #10 Quarterback for the Washington Redskins. He was the surprise winner of the Heisman trophy. And the No. 2 overall pick of the NFL 2012 draft, selected by the Washington Redskins. And after Week 1 of the NLF 2012 season, Redskins fans can reasonably begin to believe that they have finally found themselves a quarterback. Robert Griffin III, also known as RG III was scintillating in his first start. His numbers were great but even beyond that, it was the way carried himself, his “I got this attitude”, his composure. RG III completed 19 of 26 passes for 320 yards and 2 touchdowns. He also ran for 42 yards. Robert Griffin III did not throw a single interception. He finished the game with a passer rating of 139.9, the highest of any quarterback in Week 1. Period. He is the first rookie we have ever nominated for these honors in his first game, in Week 1. If there was ever a more deserving nominee for the BadaSSitude Pro Football Player of Week 1, we do not know who that is.
Matthew Stafford, #9, Quarterback for the Detroit Lions is not a stranger to this nomination. We remember nominating him in Week 11 of the 2011 season. Matt Stafford started with a rather shaky performance. Early in the quarter, the Detroit Lions were trailing 20-13. Stafford had thrown 3 interceptions that to many were the culprits in the trailing score. Matt led his team down with a drive that culminated in 5 yard touchdown run. With 1:55 minutes remaining in the game and the Lions trailing 23-20, Matt Stafford engineered a nine-play, 80-yard drive that ended with a 5-yard touchdown pass to Smith. For the afternoon, Matt Stafford completed 32 of 48 passes, for 355 yards and 1 touchdown. He was intercepted 3 times. More than anything, we like the BadaSSitude and fortitude with which he came back to help he team in the fourth quarter. We are nominating Matt Stafford for the BadaSSitude Pro Football Player of Week 1.
Kevin Ogletree, #85, is a Wide Receiver for the Dallas Cowboys who were in NY for the opening game of the 2012 NFL season against the defending Superbowl Champions, the New York Giants . The Cowboys went into the game decided underdogs. But there is a reason they play the games. So that players with the BadaSSitude quotient such as Kevin Ogletree can show what they are made of as they upend the favorites. It was not just that he had 8 receptions in the game. Or that each of those receptions averaged 14.3 yards. It was not just because he had 114 receiving yards for the game. Or that he caught 2 crucial touchdown passes. Yes it was all those things. But more importantly he seemed unstoppable when it mattered. He played with attitude. Ogletree imposed him excellence on the New York Giants as he helped his team win. He was very clearly, a fitting candidate for the BadaSSitude Pro Football Player of Week 1.
C.J. Spiller, #28, Running Back for the Buffalo Bills caught our attention with his relentlessness. Sometimes, a player will shine so brilliantly in a losing effort, push so hard, that nominating the player is a total no brainer. C.J. Spiller was not even the projected starter. But an injury to the starting running back thrust him into the starring role for the Buffalo Bills. And boy, did he ever look the part? Against the Jets, in a lopsided 28 – 48 loss, Spiller was a sight for sore eyes in Buffalo. He rushed for a career best 169 rushing yards on 14 carries. That is a 12.1 yards per carry average! In the 2nd quarter, C.J. Spiller scored a touchdown on a 56 yard run which was also a career long for him. He also added 2 receptions for 25 yards. The catches brought his total yards from scrimmage for the day to 194, another career high. You can’t argue with nominating C.J. Spiller for the BadaSSitude Pro Football Player of Week 1.
